Maltese teachers'union orders college lecturers to strike

Xinhua,February 23, 2018 Adjust font size:

VALLETTA, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Lecturers of the Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) held a two-hour strike on Thursday over a dispute between the college and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) on a new collective agreement.

MUT and MCAST are currently locked in talks over a new pay package for lecturing staff, after the previous agreement expired in 2016.

The union is demanding that the package match that of lecturers of the country's Junior College, another post-secondary education institution.

While the MUT has accused MCAST of not showing any goodwill in talks, the college has insisted that it has offered lecturers an attractive offer that will see their salary matching that of Junior College lecturers by 2019.

MCAST president Silvio De Bono said the college remained open to discussions with the union at any time, adding that the college wanted to conclude talks as quickly as possible.

He acknowledged that MCAST's offer did not match the unions demands, adding however that the college also needed to ensure the financial sustainability of any package offered. Enditem
