VIENNA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The number of naturalizations in Austria have increased 7.5 percent in 2017 to reach 9,271 people, Statistics Austria said on Wednesday.
Some 35 percent of the new Austrians were born in the country, while 37.3 percent were under 18 years of age, figures showed.
People holding a citizenship from Bosnia and Herzegovina made up the highest number of new Austrian nationals, numbering 1,288 or 13.9 percent of the total.
This was followed by Turks, 799, Kosovars, 664, and Serbs, 557.
The national capital of Vienna conducted the highest number of naturalizations, making up 27.6 percent of the total, while a decline in naturalizations compared to 2016 was recorded in three states.
Since the record year of 2003 where 45,112 people were granted Austrian citizenship, there was a steady decline down to 6,190 people in 2010, though since 2011 the numbers have been on a gradual upward trend again. Enditem
