Albania vows to clean police structure

TIRANA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Albanian authorities are set to clean police structures from all those officials involved in corrupt affairs, who have financial discrepancies or do not justify their wealth within two years, Albania's Deputy Interior Minister Julian Hodaj said Wednesday.

"The law will come into effect 15 days after approval, adding that the first stage will last 24 months and the second stage will be repeated every three years," Hodaj said.

Hodaj explained in an interview with Albanian Telegraphic Agency that the process of police vetting was based on three criteria, integrity, wealth and professional competence while he stressed that the process would be extended from the top to the bottom of police ranks.

"The process of vetting the State Police, Service for Internal Issues and Complaints and Republican Guard aims to promote the healthy part of these institutions and get rid of the rotten part, building the foundations of future police," Hodaj said.

Under the bill, which is set to go through parliament of Albania on Thursday, assessment of high ranks will be conducted by an external commission composed of members outside the State Police. Enditem
