MAPUTO, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Mozambican authorities said Wednesday that at least 50 people, including the 17 killed in the Monday garbage damp collapse, have died because of heavy rainfall in the last three days in the capital Maputo and its neighboring town Matola.

"The people who lost their lives were directly affected by floods and high winds that toppled their homes in Maputo and Matola," Paulo Tomas, the spokesman for the Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) of Mozambique, told the press.

According to the INGC, in addition to fatalities, 150,000 people were directly affected while many residential houses and infrastructures were destroyed.

The spokesman said the rains are going to continue till the end of the month, and families living in risky areas are advised to abandon their houses and move to a safer place.

He added that urban areas in the south and center of the country will continuously be affected by bad weather condition.

"There are predictions of possible floods and erosion in Maputo and Beira, as well as destruction of infrastructure," he said. Enditem
