Villarreal defender Semedo arrested on charges of assault, robbery and illegal detention

MADRID, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Villarreal's Portuguese defender Ruben Semedo was arrested on Tuesday morning by members of the Spanish Civil Guard on charges of assault, robbery and holding a man against his will according to reports in the Spanish press.

Photos published in the online version of the Valencia based newspaper, 'Las Provincias' shows a Civil Guard vehicle parked outside Semedo' s chalet with three officials standing guard on the building.

The paper reported that Semedo and two other men (one of whom is allegedly Semedo's cousin) maintained the person who reported the offences tied up against their will in Semedo's home earlier this month.

After threatening the victim with pistols, which they fired in an attempt to intimidate him, Semedo and his accomplishes allegedly then assaulting him and stealing the keys to his flat in Valencia.

According to 'Las Provincias' they then used the keys to gain entry to the flat where they stole money and "other things which could compromise the footballer."

The alleged victim of these offences reported them to the police on February 12th and also presented a medical report which confirmed the extent of injuries, including a broken ankle, he had suffered during the incident.

As a result of his arrest Semedo was not present at Villarreal' s training session as the club prepares to entertain Olympique Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night, although the club has not made any statement about Semedo's situation. Enditem
