Iran summons Sweden envoy over citizenship row

Xinhua,February 20, 2018 Adjust font size:

TEHRAN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Iran summoned Sweden's ambassador to Tehran over granting "unconventional" citizenship to a "guilty" Iranian national, Iran's Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The Iranian national, Ahmad Reza Jalali, has been charged with "espionage" for the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, and has had a role in the assassination of Iranian scientists, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.

The Sweden ambassador was called on Monday and Iran's "strong protest" over the Swedish government's move was given to her, said Qasemi.

Based on the laws on the Islamic republic, the "acquired foreign citizenship of Jalali "is unacceptable and he is a Iranian," he said.

"We consider the move by the Swedish government as unconventional, questionable and unfriendly," Qasemi said, adding that "no country is allowed to interfere in the Islamic republic's internal affairs under any circumstances."

According to Press TV, Jalali was arrested in 2016 upon travelling to Iran and based on his confession, he was convicted of spying for Mossad and complicity in murdering Iranian nuclear scientists.

Iran's Supreme Court upheld Jalali's death sentence last December.

On Saturday, the Swedish government announced that Jalali had been granted Swedish citizenship. Enditem
