TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as investors opted to secure gains following the market's recent run with a retreat in European issues also providing some impetus.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 224.11 points, or 1.01 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,925.10.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 12.70 points, or 0.72 percent, at 1,762.45.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 241.8 points, or 0.78 percent, to 30,873.629 points on Tuesday.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 30,720.48 and 31,339.689. Turnover totaled 107.80 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 13.78 billion U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Tuesday moved down 8.65 points, or 0.48 percent to close at 1,801.02 points.
Some 8.52 billion shares worth 44.08 billion baht (about 1.41 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed flat on a negative note Tuesday.
Benchmark indices wiped out gains in last hour of trade after the rupee extended losses to 64.85 against the U.S. dollar, down 1 percent from previous settlement.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 33,703.59, 71.07 points or 0.21 percent down compared to its previous close at 33,774.66.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Tuesday at 5,909 points, down 31.21 points from Monday's finish.
Total turnover increased to about 3.91 billion taka (about 47.16 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday from about 3.77 billion taka (about 45.43 million U.S. dollars) on Monday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed lower by 26.41 points, or 0.39 percent, to a level of 6,662.87 on Tuesday.
Some 429,275 transactions were booked, involving 17.28 billion copies of shares with a value of 8.36 trillion rupiah (about 613.8 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Tuesday.
The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,855.99 down 1.33 points or 0.07 percent, and the Emas was at 13,250.80 down 16.20 points or 0.12 percent.
Meanwhile, turnover decrease to 2.28 billion shares valued at 2.10 billion ringgit Malaysia (538.46 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.36 billion shares valued at 1.89 billion ringgit Malaysia (487.13 million U.S. dollars) on Monday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed down on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.33 percent or 11.35 points to close at 3476.53.
A total of 1.91 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.31 billion Singapore dollars (about 990.27 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 280 to 180.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.14 percent higher on Tuesday.
The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 12.48 points to 8722.70. The all-share index went up by 6.59 points, or 0.13 percent, to 5129.79.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market ended flat on Tuesday with strong rallies in info tech and the energy sector offset by a lacklustre performance from financial stocks and materials.
At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was down 0.70 points or 0.01 percent at 5,940.90, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 1.60 points or 0.03 percent at 6,045.60.
