DPRK again warns against U.S.-S. Korean joint drills after PyeongChang Olympics

PYONGYANG, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Monday again warned against resumption of U.S.-South Korean joint military drills after the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, saying it would spoil the atmosphere of reconciliation in the Korean peninsula.

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a commentary that U.S. charge d'affaires in Seoul has recently hinted that the joint military exercises would be conducted as usual after the Winter Olympics and the issue of postponing the military exercises further has not yet been discussed.

Resuming the war exercises "is a provocative act of chilling the active efforts of the DPRK and enthusiasm of the international community to defuse tension and create a peaceful environment," said KCNA.

The commentary said whenever the joint military exercises were held, the peace and security on the Korean peninsula were seriously threatened and hard-won atmosphere for reconciliation and cooperation between the north and the south were spoilt in a moment.

In a separate commentary on Monday, the KCNA also accused the United States of keeping using belligerent remarks against the DPRK in order to pressure others into imposing more sanctions on and creating conditions for staging preemptive strikes against Pyongyang. Enditem
