MOSCOW -- At least four women were killed and five others were injured in a shooting attack during a celebration of Russia's traditional holiday Maslenitsa in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, regional Interior Ministry said Sunday.

The incident took place at approximately at 4:30 pm local time (1330 GMT), when an unidentified gunman armed with a hunting rifle opened fire at a crowd of civilians who were attending a Maslenitsa celebration in the town of Kizlyar in Dagestan, according to the ministry's spokesman. HARARE -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Sunday that the government will fulfill its financial and material promises made to the late former prime minister and opposition Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Addressing mourners at Tsvangirai's home in Harare where he had gone to pay his condolences, Mnangagwa said he would see to it that pledges he made to the late premier are fulfilled, the state-run New Ziana reported.

GENEVA -- Two people were swept away by an avalanche that broke out Sunday in the Swiss part of the Alps in the canton of Valais, local police said late Sunday afternoon.

At the beginning the local police said that "a dozen people" had been carried away in the incident, which occurred at 2,500 meters altitude at the Fenestral pass in the Finhaut region. (Switzerland-Alps-Avalanche)

DAMASCUS -- The Syrian army started shelling the rebel positions in Damascus' Eastern Ghouta countryside Sunday, the pro-government al-Ekhbariah TV reported.

Loud sounds of explosions were heard in the Syrian capital as rebel positions came under attack in Eastern Ghouta, which has returned under the spotlight with a military showdown recently. (Syria-Damascus-Shelling) Enditem
