1st LD: 2 people swept away by avalanche in Swiss Alps: police

GENEVA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two people were swept away by an avalanche that broke out Sunday in the Swiss part of the Alps in the canton of Valais, local police said late Sunday afternoon.

At the beginning the local police said that "a dozen people" had been carried away in the incident, which occurred at 2,500 meters altitude at the Fenestral pass in the Finhaut region.

Local media reported that the two people had been found and were slightly wounded.

Earlier on Sunday local police has issued a statement warning that the danger of avalanche in the region was "high".

According to the police statement, earlier the day several avalanches have also been triggered outside the safe slopes in the region, and one skier was hospitalized after being swept away by the deluge. Enditem
