Tunisian Parliament approves new central bank governor

TUNIS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Tunisian Assembly of People's Representatives (Parliament) has approved Marouen Abassi as the new governor of Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

A total of 134 deputies voted in favor of this appointment, with 15 objections and 5 abstentions in the vote on Thursday evening.

Abassi became the 13th BCT governor since it was founded in 1958. The mandate of the new governor is six years and renewable for once, under the Tunisian Constitution.

Appointed by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, Abassi is to succeed Chedly Ayari who resigned on Wednesday.

Chahed decided to replace Ayari following BCT data showed that the country's foreign currency reserves declined to the lowest level in 15 years. Enditem
