Nigerian leader congratulates South Africa's new president

ABUJA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pledged to work with the new president of South Africa to enhance cooperation of the governments of Africa's two leading economies.

In a statement, Buhari hailed the peaceful transfer of power that resulted in the election of Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa as the new South African president earlier on Thursday.

The Nigerian leader also saluted the leadership and statesmanship of South African former president Jacob Zuma who resigned Wednesday evening following pressure to do so by the governing African National Congress party.

Ramaphosa, who was elected by the national assembly, is the fifth democratic president of the Republic of South Africa. Enditem
