MANILA -- Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez thanked Alibaba's founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma on Thursday for providing insights on optimising the use of technology to improve governance and prepare Filipinos for the future under a digital economy.

Upon Ma's invitation, Dominguez, along with Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno and other government officials and representatives from the Philippines' business sector attended the Alibaba Business School's three-day New Economy Workshop last week. KABUL -- The number of civilian casualties in conflict-hit Afghanistan documented by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in 2017 reached more than 10,000, according to a report released here on Thursday.

Out of 10,453 casualties in 2017, the report said, 3,438 were killed and 7,015 others injured. (Afghanistan-Casualties)

KATHMANDU -- Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Thursday became the 41st Prime Minister of Nepal.

His appointment comes following the resignation of Sher Bahadur Deuba from the post in the wake of completion of the electoral processes of provinces, House of Representatives and National Assembly.

Nepal successfully conducted the three-tier elections of local bodies, provinces and parliament in 2017, giving high hopes to local people that the country will usher in much-needed political stability and development. (Nepal-New PM)

KATHMANDU -- Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Thursday stepped down to pave the way to the left alliance for formation of a new government.
