WASHINGTON -- A mass shooting in a Florida high school killed 17 people on Wednesday, local police said.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told the press that 12 were killed in the school building, two were killed outside the building, one on a road nearby and two died in hospital from wounds. (US-Shooting)

JOHANNESBURG -- South African President Jacob Zuma resigned Wednesday evening under the pressure of the ruling party African National Congress (ANC).

Despite an earlier show of defiance, Zuma announced his resignation to the nation just an hour before the deadline set for him by the ANC, in an effort to avoid dividing the party. (South Africa-ANC)

LA PAZ -- The detonation of three kilos of dynamite caused an explosion on Tuesday night in the Bolivian city of Oruro, leaving four dead and over 10 injured, the police announced on Wednesday.

The commander of the Bolivian police, Faustino Mendoza, told a press conference that the type of explosive used had been discovered and that the investigation was underway to find out who was responsible and their motives. (Bolivia-Explosion-Carnival)

MAPUTO -- The Mozambique Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) announced Wednesday that 34 people died as a result of extreme weather condition in the northern and central region of the country in the past 13 days.

"Of this number 17 were victims of lightning strikes, two drawn, and 12 were victims of strong winds, two were swept away by water and one was electrocuted," said Paulo Tomas, the INGC spokesperson, in a press conference. (Mozambique-Extreme Weather)

UNITED NATIONS -- The UN special envoy for Syria on Wednesday stressed the need for the immediate de-escalation of violence in Syria.

"This is as violent and worrying and dangerous a moment as any that I have seen in my time as special envoy," Staffan de Mistura told the Security Council. "I strongly reiterate the appeal of the (UN) secretary-general to all concerned in Syria and the region and beyond to de-escalate immediately and unconditionally, and urge all stakeholders ... to use their influence to help reduce violence."
