France unveils new format of final exam for school students

PARIS, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- French education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer on Wednesday presented the government major reform of baccalaureate exam to better prepare secondary school students for university and job market.

The new format of the so-called "Bac" exam will include four written test from a week-long exams in addition to a new 20-minute "oral maturity" exam.

Besides, the three broad subject choices, science, literature or social sciences, would be eliminated "to offer more choice to students, avoid artificial hierarchies between series", the minister said.

The four written tests and oral maturity exam will account for 60 percent of the average bac. The remaining 40 percent will come from continuous assessment and on the students' grades from the last two years in school.

"It's an incentive to work continuously rather than cramming," the minister said.

The reformed baccalaureate, set to be introduced in 2021, would offer "more equality, freedom and quality", to secondary school students, according to Blanquer. Enditem
