VALLETTA, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Malta's President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca has thanked the Chinese community in Malta for its role in strengthening an enriching Maltese society.
On the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Coleiro Preca sent wishes to Chinese people by a video published by Xinhua News Agency.
The Year of Dog will begin on Feb. 16, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important holiday for Chinese around the world.
"Let me thank you for your participation in the life of our country and your contributions to the prosperity and wellbeing of our Maltese Islands," said Coleiro Preca.
She said that the occasion was a perfect reminder of the many cultures and traditions that came together to "enrich" the Maltese society.
The president praised the work of the Chinese Community Association in Malta, for its work in strengthening the links between the two communities, through a variety of activities and initiatives.
"I am confident that the beginning of this new year will also bring a renewal of our shared commitment to honor the rich diversity of our society," she said. "It is this diversity that connects us all together in solidarity and dignity."
The president went on to speak of the importance of respecting one another and those in society who embrace different traditions.
"The honor we show one another by treasuring the things which distinguish us, while also cherishing the values that unite us together, is proof of the great desire we all feel to make peace and harmony within our communities, and within Maltese society."
The new year is the Chinese Year of the Dog, a symbol of loyalty, devotion and practicality, said Coleiro Preca.
"I would like to add that it is also a symbol of friendship, reminding us that when we create opportunities for friendship, we are helping to build a stronger and more resilient society," she said.
She expressed her hope that the coming year would see Malta and its Chinese community work together to promote more support for "each and every individual and family", especially those who are vulnerable.
"Let us also ensure that we are doing our utmost to create respectful dialogue among our diverse communities -- there is so much for us to learn from one another by connecting in a spirit of friendship," she added. Enditem
