International Red Cross vows to address humanitarian situation of Libyan displaced people

TRIPOLI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, on Tuesday pledged to help the Libyan authorities deal with the humanitarian situation of displaced people.

Maurer made his announcement following a meeting with members of the Libyan eastern-based House of Representatives.

"This was a very important meeting for the ICRC with members of the House of Representatives. We discussed the humanitarian situation of displaced people and those affected by violence, and we promised to deal with the situation which affects a large segment of Libyans," Maurer said following the meeting.

Maurer also stressed the importance of cooperation with the Libyan Red Crescent Society in carrying out humanitarian activities in Libya and discussing mechanisms to assist civilians stranded in conflict areas.

The International Red Cross, in cooperation and partnership with a number of local humanitarian and relief organizations in Libya, provides a number of emergency relief services, including medical supplies for hospitals located in distressed areas and food for many displaced Libyans throughout the country.

The Red Cross is also conducting a number of training courses for a number of Libyan Red Crescent members to rapidly respond to emergency crises.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya later in January launched a humanitarian response program, which seeks to raise 313 million U.S. dollars to help more than 1 million displaced Libyans. Enditem
