Unvaccinated woman dies of measles in west-central France

Xinhua,February 13, 2018 Adjust font size:

PARIS, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- The regional health agency of France's New Aquitaine region announced a patient who was suffering from measles died in Poitiers, west-central France on Tuesday.

The young woman, who was not vaccinated, was hospitalized at the CHU Poitiers earlier this month after measles caused severe complications, the health agency said in a statement.

So far this year, 269 people have been infected with the viral infection, with one case out of four requiring hospitalization. In 90 percent of the confirmed cases, the infected people had not been vaccinated.

Four patients were admitted to resuscitation for severe complications, it added.

"This (death) reinforces the need for the entire population to quickly check their vaccination, the only way to stop the epidemic," the health agency said in a statement.

As of Jan. 1, 2018, the vaccination against measles is mandatory for babies in France. Enditem
