Czech Republic beats Switzerland 3-1 in Fed Cup first round

PRAGUE, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Czech Republic beat Switzerland 3-1 on Sunday in the first round of the Fed Cup in Prague. The Czech team advanced to the semifinal of the women's tennis team competition after the victory.

This is the eight meeting between the Czech Republic and Switzerland in the Fed Cup.

In the two singles matches on Saturday, the Czech Republic lead 2-0 after Petra Kvitova and Barbora Strycova won their respective singles matches.

In the first singles match on Sunday, Kvitova beat Belinda Bencic 2-0. Overall the Czech team beat Switzerland 3-0 in all three singles matches and advanced to the semifinal. In the doubles, Czech players Strycova and Lucie Safarova lost to Timea Bacsinszky and Jil Teichmann 2-1.

The Czech women's tennis team has won the Fed Cup five times in the past seven years. Enditem
