Police detain 26 over goat smuggling

FUZHOU, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Fuzhou City have detained 26 suspects accused of smuggling goats from Myanmar, authorities said Thursday.

In April 2017, anti-smuggling police with Fuzhou Customs of Fujian Province were tipped off about a goat smuggling ring. After eight months of investigation, they found the gang had smuggled over 10,000 tonnes of goats from Myanmar via southwest China's Yunnan, with the amount of money involved reaching 270 million yuan (about 43 million U.S. dollars),

On Jan. 30, more than 150 police officers raided locations across China and detained 37 suspects. More than 700 smuggled goats were seized on the spot.

Smuggled goats are often sold at cheaper prices, disturbing the domestic market prices, according to the Fuzhou Customs. Enditem
