BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Jorge Ricardo broke the world record for most career wins by a jockey when he celebrated his 12,845th victory here on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old, nicknamed Ricardinho, beat the mark set by his long-time Canadian rival Russell Baze, who retired last year.

"I've been waiting for this moment for a long time," a jubilant Ricardo said after winning the fourth race at San Isidro racecourse on Hope Glory.

"I've achieved my goal and now I just want to celebrate, remembering all of the people who helped me in Brazil and in Argentina," he added.

Ricardo, who equalled Baze's record at Gavea in his home city of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, began his career as a 15-year-old and claimed his maiden win on his first day.

Since then he has competed in an estimated 70,000 races, mostly in Brazil and Argentina. Enditem
