WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Two cars of a high-speed Amtrak train broke apart Tuesday morning in the eastern U.S. state of Maryland due to a "mechanical issue", according to the railroad service.
No passengers or crew members were injured in the incident, which occurred before 7:00 a.m. near Havre de Grace, Maryland, said an Amtrak spokesperson.
The 2150 Acela train, en route from Washington D.C. to Boston, was reportedly traveling at about 125 mph, when the cars carrying 52 passengers separated. These passengers have been transferred to another train to continue their travel.
"We are currently investigating the cause of the car separation, inspecting every Acela trainset, and taking any necessary actions to prevent a reoccurrence," the spokesperson told TheHill.
On Sunday, an Amtrak passenger train collided with an empty freight train in South Carolina, leaving two Amtrak employees dead and more than 100 injured.
In December, an Amtrak train derailed in northwestern U.S. state of Washington, killing three people and injured dozens. Last week, an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to a retreat in West Virginia hit a garbage truck in Virginia, leaving one dead and two seriously injured. Enditem
