PYEONGCHANG, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The 23rd Winter Olympic Games begins in PyeongChang, South Korea on Friday. Following are the numbers related to the history of the Games:

114 - the record for most medals won by a National Olympic Committee in a single sport at the Olympic Winter Games (Austria in Alpine skiing).

102 - the record number of events to be held at the PyeongChang Games.

40 - biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway was 40 years and 12 days old when he won the men's 10km sprint in biathlon at the Sochi Games to become the oldest gold medallist in an individual event in Winter Olympic Games history.

25 - figure skating will be contested for the 25th time at the Olympic Games. It has been part of all 22 Olympic Winter Games and at the Summer Games of 1908 and 1920.

23 - these will be the 23rd Winter Olympic Games. The first edition was held in Chamonix in 1924.

14 - the United States has won medals in a record 14 different sports at the Winter Olympic Games. USA has yet to win a medal in biathlon.

13 - the record number of medals won by Bjoerndalen, the most successful athlete in Winter Olympic Games history. He won a record-equalling eight gold medals.

12 - Canada has won gold medals in a record 12 different sports at the Winter Olympics. It has yet to win a gold medal in Nordic combined, luge and ski jumping.

6 - the record for claiming most medals without winning gold, held by Hungary. It has won two silver medals and four bronze medals, all in figure skating.

5 - Eric Heiden (USA) won all the men's speed skating events in 1980 to become the first athlete to win five individual golds in a single Winter or Summer Olympic Games.

4 - Chun Lee-Kyung (South Korea) has won the most gold medals for Republic of Korea at the Olympic Winter Games. She won four in short track, two in 1994 and two in 1998.

3 - South Korea has won medals in three different sports at the Winter Olympic Games: short track (42), speed skating (nine) and figure skating (two).
