Zambian gov't urges citizens' monitoring of development projects

LUSAKA, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Monday urged citizens to take keen interest in monitoring implementation of projects being financed by public funds.

Minister of Finance Felix Mutati said his ministry was looking forward to citizens' participation in economic transformation programs with open minds by taking interest in monitoring government financed projects in their localities.

"This is because, the success which the economy is scoring through fiscal consolidation are not a twist of luck but a result of articulate reforms and the toils of citizens," he said in a statement announcing the funds released in January this year for various projects.

The finance ministry released 5.2 billion Zambian Kwacha (about 530 million U.S. dollars) for various development projects last month, according to the statement.

According to him, through citizen-induced project monitoring, the government will be able to implement projects effectively and ensure that value for money prevails in state financed projects. Enditem
