1st LD-Writethru: Former senior Jiangsu, Hunan officials charged with graft

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Two former provincial-level officials of Jiangsu and Hunan have been indicted for graft-related charges, according to the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) Monday.

Li Yunfeng, former deputy governor of Jiangsu, and Zhang Wenxiong, former head of the publicity department of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, have been indicted by procuratorates in Shandong and Guangxi, respectively, the SPP said in a statement.

According to the SPP, the Heze city procuratorate in Shandong filed the indictment against Li to the Heze Intermediate People's Court.

Li was accused of taking bribes. Prosecutors said Li had taken advantage of his posts to seek benefits for others and accepted huge amount of money or gifts in return.

Zhang's case was filed by the Guilin city procuratorate in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

He was accused of taking advantage of his power to seek interests for others, or using his posts to seek illegal benefits for others through other officials' work and accepting huge amount of money or gifts.

Also, the properties and spending of Zhang and his family were found to have markedly exceeded his legal income, and he could not explain the source of the extra gains.

The prosecutors accused Zhang of taking bribes and holding a huge amount of property from unidentified sources.

The SPP statement said that prosecutors in the two cases had informed the defendants of their litigation rights, interrogated them and listened to their lawyers' opinions. The rights of the defendants have been properly protected. Enditem
