ANKARA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) --Turkey successfully test-fired its domestically made HISAR-A surface-to-air missile on Thursday, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced.

The low-altitude missile was launched in the central province of Aksaray with attendance of Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli, the ministry said in a statement.

The HISAR-A missile system will play an important role in Turkey's air defense, the ministry said.

The missile system is developed and produced by Turkey's leading defense companies Roketsan and Aselsan.

It is designed to protect ground targets from air attacks by aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and air-to-ground missiles.

The missile is expected to be delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces by 2020.

Turkey tested fired its domestic medium-range HISAR-O air defense missile in 2016. Enditem
