U.S. senior diplomat Thomas Shannon announces retirement

Xinhua,February 02, 2018 Adjust font size:

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon had announced retirement after nearly 35 years of diplomatic service, the State Department tweeted on Thursday.

Shannon, a veteran diplomat, has served under six U.S. presidents and 10 secretaries of state. He has served as a U.S. ambassador to Brazil, a counselor of the State Department and, for two weeks last year, acting secretary of state.

Shannon, 60, was nominated by former President Barack Obama in February 2016 as undersecretary for political affairs, the third-top position at the State Department.

In his retirement letter, Shannon said the decision to step down was personal.

The retirement of Shannon came as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson kicked off his visit to Latin American nations of Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Jamaica on Feb. 1-7. Enditem
