Austrian airports see record passenger numbers in 2017

VIENNA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Austria's six major airports have seen a combined 4.5-percent increase in passenger numbers in 2017 to reach a record total of 28.9 million, according to data released by a national airport association on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Osterreichischer Verkehrsflughafen (AOV) said the increase equated to 1.2 million more passengers compared to 2016, and came despite a difficult environment, caused in part by the collapse of Air Berlin and Austrian subsidiary Niki.

The boost in numbers also notably occurred despite the number of flights (including arrivals and departures) remained constant at 281,043.

The Vienna International Airport saw the largest passenger numbers by a huge margin, with 24.4 million people passing through its terminals, a 4.5-percent increase over 2016.

Salzburg Airport, the nation's second largest, saw an 8.7-percent increase to 1.9 million passengers, while Innsbruck Airport in the nation's west saw a similar 8.5-percent increase in its passengers numbers, to reach just over one million. Enditem
