HARARE, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday appointed High Court Judge Priscilla Chigumba as the new Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson.
She replaces Rita Makarau who resigned in December last year, just a few months before elections set for mid this year.
Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi confirmed the appointment and said Chigumba will be sworn in on Thursday.
Mnangagwa, who took over from former president Robert Mugabe who resigned in November last year after a military intervention, has pledged to hold free and fair elections and invite international observers to the polls.
The electoral body is currently running a one month mop-up bio metric voter registration exercise which ends on February 8.
As at Jan. 28, 5.1 million people against a target of 5.5 million had registered to vote since the exercise started in October last year. Enditem
