UN official asks for comprehensive policy framework to eradicate poverty

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin on Monday asked for a comprehensive and integrated socio-economic policy framework to tackle poverty.
It is crucial to develop a comprehensive and integrated social and economic policy framework supported by strong institutions, board-based participation and evidence-based policy-making to tackle poverty, Liu told the Commission for Social Development, a body under the UN Economic and Social Council.
He also asked to create productive employment and decent work for all. In this regard, he stressed the need to invest in people to enable them with health and skills for access to decent work opportunities.
The UN official also asked to build resilience of people living in poverty, including those living in countries that are prone to climate change.
Liu stressed the importance of social protection in mitigating risks and preventing people from falling into poverty.
He said poverty eradication remains the top priority of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. He asked for more efforts to eradicate poverty all over the world so that people can live in dignity. Enditem
