AMMAN, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday said Jordan will continue its effort to defend the Palestinian issue at all international fronts, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

King Abdullah made the remarks at a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Jordanian leader urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in protecting the rights of the Palestinians and the Arabs and Muslims and Christians in the city of Jerusalem, which is key to stability and peace in the Middle East.

Discussions also covered the key role played by the UN and the need for continued support by the international community to the UN agency as there are 6 million Palestinian refugees registered with the agency.

Abbas briefed the King on his latest meetings with heads of states and international players to face the threats encountering the Palestinian issue.

He also voiced his appreciation to Jordan for its support to the Palestinians and for defending the Islamic and Christian shrines in Jerusalem. Enditem
