Libyan Higher Council of State slams appointment of new central bank governor

Xinhua,January 29, 2018 Adjust font size:

TRIPOLI, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Head of Libya's Tripoli-based Higher Council of State on Monday criticized the appointment of a new governor for the central bank by the eastern-based House of Representatives (parliament).

The Head of the Higher Council of State, Abdulrahman Swehli, stressed that the move of the House of Representatives is "doomed to failure," adding that the price would be paid by the Libyan citizens, the media office of the council said.

The newly-elected governor of the central bank of Libya, Mohammed Al-Shukri, was sworn in on Monday.

Swehli also stressed "the illegality of any institution, decision or action outside the Libyan political agreement," the office added.

He called on members of the parliament to "wake up and give priority to the interest of the country, which will be achieved only by consensus and full partnership."

Despite signing a UN-sponsored peace agreement by the political factions, Libya remains politically divided amid insecurity and unrest.

The division also includes the central bank, which is divided between the east and the west of the country. Enditem
