THE HAGUE, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Magnus Carlsen won the 80th edition of the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Norwegian world champion was equal with Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri after finishing the 13th and final round against Sergey Karjakin from Russia with a draw. Giri also ended with a draw against Chinese chess player Wei Yi.

With both leaders on nine points, playoffs were needed and Carlsen won the first blitz game of five minutes and drew the second to claim his record 6th win.

Carlsen had also won the 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2016 editions. Enditem
