BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher Friday as investor confidence was boosted by strong industrial profit data.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went up 0.28 percent to close at 3,558.13. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.05 percent higher at 11,557.82.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 499.67 points or 1.53 percent to 33,154.12 points on Friday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 32,794.13 and 32,836.28. Turnover totaled 179.95 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 23.02 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower on Friday, erasing earlier gains as investor consternation grew ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's speech expected later in the day at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 37.61 points, or 0.16 percent, from Thursday to finish the day at 23,631.88, marking its lowest closing level since Jan. 4.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Friday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 12.53 points, or 0.49 percent, to settle at 2,574.76. Trading volume stood at 396 million shares worth 7.56 trillion won (7.11 billion U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Friday moved up 9.59 points, or 0.53 percent to close at 1,828.88 points.

Some 13.33 billion shares worth 78.53 billion baht (about 2.51 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,853.92, up 8.06 points or 0.44 percent, and the Emas was at 13,374.50, up 38.23 points or 0.29 percent.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) went down 0.15 percent or 5.48 points to close at 3,567.14.

A total of 1.64 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.21 billion Singapore dollars (about 924.62 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 224 to 217.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 1,115.64 points on Friday, up 11.07 points or 1 percent against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 292.969 million shares worth 9.302 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (414.99 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 153 stocks went up, 150 stocks fell down, while 42 stocks remained unchanged.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished higher on Friday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index up 0.18 point, or 0.05 percent, to close at 337.33 points.
