BERLIN, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Monchengladbach and Nico Elvedi have agreed on a contract extension ahead of schedule, the Bundesliga club announced in an official statement on Wednesday.

The Swiss international has penned a new deal and will stay with the "Foals" until June 2021.

"We are pleased that we were able to bind Nico to Borussia for a long time. Nico is a regular starter and a constant even though he is still one of the younger player of the squad at the age of 21," Monchengladbach's sporting director Max Eberl said.

The 21-year-old defender joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Swiss outfit FC Zurich to make 80 appearances providing one goal and four assists ever since.

"Borussia is a top club which has supported me a lot from the beginning. The club trusted me from the start and now I want to give something back. I am glad that the talks with those responsible have gone so well," Elvedi told the club's official homepage.

The "Foals" sit currently on the 5th place of the standings. They encounter Eintracht Frankfurt at the opener of the 20th round in Bundesliga on Friday. Enditem
