KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 Taliban militants were killed and 10 others wounded in an airstrike in Afghanistan's northern province of Sari Pul, an army source said Wednesday.

"The incident occurred late Tuesday in Shah Toot locality, Sayyad district after Afghan National Army (ANA) Air Force struck a militants' position. The strike was launched based on a specific intelligence information which confirmed the presence of scores of militants there," Nastraullah Jamshidi, a press officer of army Corps 209 Shaheen based in the region, told Xinhua.

In addition, one militant named Mohammad Akram was killed and two militants were wounded early Wednesday, after an improvised explosive device (IED) they were carrying to plant along a main road, detonated accidently in Archi district of neighboring Kunduz province, district Chief Nasruddin Nazari told Xinhua.

The Taliban militant group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than 16 years, has yet to make comments. Enditem
