CHICAGO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- A shooting in a southwest Kentucky high school on Tuesday morning has left one person dead and several others injured, local officials said.
Governor of Kentucky Matt Bevin confirmed the "tragic shooting" at Marshall County High School in a tweet post, adding "shooter was in custody, one confirmed fatality and multiple others wounded..."
Local media quoted sources with Marshall County Board of Education as saying the fatality was a student.
The governor later issued a statement as he was rushing to the county, saying "this is a tremendous tragedy and speaks to the heartbreak present in our communities. It is unbelievable that his would happen in a small, close-knit community like Marshall County."
As there is still much unknown, he urged people not to speculate but to support each other.
Local media said police responded to a shooting at the high school around 8:00 a.m. (1400 GMT) and the scene now was secured and a suspect was arrested.
Students at the high school were later bused to a nearby middle school for parents to pick them up.
Amid the chaos following the shooting, many students had no time to take their cell phones from backpacks during the evacuation, which made parents very anxious in contacting with their kids, local television channel WPSD-6 reported.
Helicopters were seen landing at the school to treat the wounded.
More details will be available at a news conference after the governor arrives at Marshall County, said WPSD-6. Enditem
