WAKISO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Cranes former skipper and Chinese Super League side Chongqing Lifan FC's former defender, Andy Mwesigwa retired on Tuesday.

The defender, who captained Uganda's national team from 2008 to 2015 and won three regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cups, announced his retirement in Wakiso.

Mwesigwa played for Chongqing Lifan FC in 2010.

"It's been a good journey for me but I officially and painfully have to say that I leave this game. I thank the almighty God for the journey, fans and my family for all the support," Mwesigwa told Xinhua.

"I am glad that in this career I have made some friends from Iceland, China, Belgium and many others and they have been big pillars in my career for the 14 years," he said.

The defender who also featured for SC Villa in the Ugandan Premier League had played for IBV Vestmanaeyjar (Iceland), Chongqing Lifan (China), Ordabasy FC (Kazakhstan), Venicami Agdelen (Turkey), and Saigon (Vietnam).

Asuman Lubowa, a former Uganda Cranes coach and now technical director of the Uganda FA, praised Mwesigwa for his contribution to Ugandan football. "He was a good leader and footballer. We thank him for his contribution," said Lubowa. Enditem
