Girl killed as violent waves hit S. Africa's Durban

JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Durban city has launched a clean-up operations after high waves hit its beach and killed one child on Sunday, EThekwini municipality said Monday.

EThekwini municipality's head of communications Tozi Mthethwa said in a statement that the waves washed away one child who was standing on the pier.

The Rescue Care paramedics also confirmed the incident in a statement that identified the victim as a 7-year-old girl.

Mthethwa said the North Beach bathing area and pier have closed as clean-up operations continue. The city said no infrastructural damage has been reported. Enditem
