5 killed, 4 injured in road accident in India

NEW DELHI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and three others injured when the auto-rickshaw carrying them collided head-on with a truck in India's eastern state of Odisha, police said Monday.

The accident took place on Jagannath Sadak in Satyabadi area of Puri district, about 60 km south of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.

"Last night an accident took place here in which five people were killed and three others wounded," a police official posted in Puri said. "Two persons died on the spot while three other died in hospital, while three others are being treated."

According to police the victims were returning after attending cremation of a relative in a nearby locality.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations to ascertain the actual reason behind the accident.

In a separate accident on Monday, a person was killed an his wife injured after being hit by another vehicle at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. Enditem
