WINDHOEK, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- An 11-year-old boy accidentally shot another pupil at a school in the north of Namibia Thursday.

The incident was confirmed by the education ministry permanent secretary Sanet Steenkamp in a statement.

Steenkamp said the victim is a 13-year-old Grade 5 boy. Steenkamp did not give the victim's name.

According to Steenkamp, the shooting incident happened at Iimbili Combined School in the Ohangwena region, about 800 kilometers from the capital Windhoek.

Steenkamp could not give details as to how and why the 11-year-old took the gun to the school.

"At this point, the ministry can only communicate the facts as a police investigation of the tragic circumstances is currently underway," Steenkamp said.

Steenkamp said the ministry is aware that the incident could have a significant impact on the emotional wellbeing and that they will offer emotional support to parents and other school children.

This is the first known incident in Namibia where a pupil shoots another to death. Enditem
