Policing Catalan crisis costs 87 mln euros: minister

MADRID, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido on Thursday put the costs of policing the Catalan independence crisis, including the independence referendum of Oct. 1, 2017, at 87 million euros.

Zoido blamed the former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont for the expense after the calling of the referendum, which was declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court.

Zoido was unable to give an exact number of National Police and Civil Guards sent to the Catalan region.

However, he confirmed that the most stable number was around 4,500 agents, and between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, 6,000 extra police and Civil Guards were stationed in the region. Enditem
