Slovenian police capture 20 illegal migrants crossing border

Xinhua,January 17, 2018 Adjust font size:

LJUBLJANA, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Slovenian police arrested some 20 migrants from Pakistan in a van that entered Slovenia illegally from Croatia after a high-speed chase early on Wednesday morning.

The chase ended when the van crashed site near the northeastern town of Ljutomer.

The regional Murska Sobota Police Department said police had chased the van with Austrian licence plates and seized the vehicle after it veered off the road due to high speed.

The Ukrainian driver tried to escape on foot by crossing the nearby Ssavnica river, but gave up after a warning from police officers.

Several people in the van, one with serious injuries, were taken to hospital for treatment and would then be under further investigation, the Slovenian Press Agency reported.

Last week, a foreign citizen was arrested at Ljubljana airport on suspicion of having brought five migrants with false passports on a flight from Turkey to Slovenia. Enditem
