UN chief urges promotion of globalization to benefit all

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged international community to promote a true "new deal" for globalization that is fair for all.

"Poverty and inequality are not unavoidable, nor is the unequal distribution of the benefits of globalization," he told an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly at which he presented his priorities for 2018.

"It's not by chance if eight individuals possess as much wealth as half the poorest population in the world," he stressed.

"Our choice is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our ambition is to build prosperous and peaceful societies for all without leaving anyone beside the road," he added.

He emphasized the importance of financing for development, asking countries and donors to fulfil their financing pledges. He also asked for efforts to curb tax evasion, money laundering and illegal flows of capital so that developing countries can better take advantage of their resources.

He also stressed the need to take advantage of dynamic private sectors and civil society and to invest in youth. Enditem
