Hungary demands apology from Romanian PM over remarks about autonomy

Xinhua,January 13, 2018 Adjust font size:

BUDAPEST, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto on Friday demanded an apology from Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Tudose over reported threatening remarks about the autonomy efforts by some ethnic Hungarian groups in Romania.

According to media reports, Tudose's remarks were in response to a resolution signed by some autonomy-seeking ethnic Hungarian groups, namely Szeklers, who live in the Romanian region of Transylvania.

In an extraordinary press conference, Szijjarto called Tudose's remarks "completely unacceptable."

The Romanian ambassador in Budapest, when summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Friday, tried to give grammatical explanation, Szijjarto said.

Szijjarto added that Hungary's aim was to continue to have a balanced, calm, mutually respectful relationship with Romania. Enditem
