VILNIUS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's population decreased by nearly 40,000 last year, leaving the Baltic country with 2.81 million residents, Statistics Lithuania announced Thursday.

Lithuania's population decreased by 37,800 or 1.3 percent in 2017, the agency said, adding emigration remains the main reason behind the decline.

Some 29,300 people arrived in Lithuania last year, a 45.5 percent increase from 2016. Returning emigrants accounted for 64.2 percent of people who arrived to Lithuania in 2017.

Due to large-scale emigration and other negative demographic trends, Lithuania's population decreased by 883,600, or 24 percent, since 1990. Enditem
