Austrian winter tourism season off to record start

VIENNA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The 2017/2018 winter tourism season in Austria has begun with a record start with 4.82 million overnight stays registered in the month of November.

In a new report on Tuesday, Statistics Austria said the figures are 3.4 percent higher than the previous November record seen in 2016.

Overnight stays from international visitors increased 4.3 percent, with the strongest boost seen in guests from Denmark (up 19.8 percent), Romania (up 13.7 percent), and Russia (up 13.5 percent).

Domestic guests meanwhile saw a 2.2 percent boost in their overnight stays.

The total number of guests also set a new record, increasing 3.7 percent year-on-year to reach 1.98 million.

The statistics office noted that the number of overnight stays from January until the end of November was also at a record 134 million, up 2.2 percent, with about 40 million visitors, an increase of 3.6 percent. Enditem
