New Year festivities draw 10.5 mln people to Moscow

MOSCOW, January 9 (Xinhua) -- New Year festivities in Moscow attracted 10.5 million people, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin wrote on his Twitter account Tuesday.

The mayor's office organized the "Journey to Christmas Festival" in the capital with the main events taking place in the central Tverskaya Street as well as some squares and parks of the city.

This year, theater was the main theme of the event, with more than 100 theatrical groups from Russia and abroad performing in the open air.

The authorities also organized ice shows and concerts in the festively decorated capital, which was lit up with fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Russia celebrated its official winter holidays from Dec. 30, 2017 to Jan. 8. Orthodox Christmas was celebrated Sunday. Enditem
