Xinhua,December 30, 2017 Adjust font size:

MAPUTO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The population in Mozambique grew to 28.8 million in 2017 from the previous 20.5 million registered in 2007, the country's National Statistics Institute (INE) in Maputo said on Friday.

Presenting the provisional results of the Fourth General Census of Population and Housing that took place in last August (2017), the chairperson of the INE Rosario Fernandes revealed that Mozambique has a population of 28,861,863 inhabitants, of which 15,061,006 are women and 13,800,857 men.

With 6.1 million inhabitants, the northern province of Nampula remains the most populous in the country, followed by the central province of Zambezia, with 5.1 million inhabitants. The coal-rich province of Tete comes third with 2.7 million inhabitants.

In the capital city of Maputo there are over one million inhabitants.

The chairperson said that the preliminary results provide safe elements for the design of public policy, especially in the socio-demographic domains.

He assured that the final results would be known by the end of June 2018.

The first General Census of Population and Housing in Mozambique was conducted in 1980, and found the existence of 12.1 million inhabitants. Enditem
