Uganda's Christmas season sees 26 killed on raods

Xinhua,December 29, 2017 Adjust font size:

KAMPALA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 26 people were killed in road accidents during Uganda's Christmas festive season, a traffic police spokesperson said on Friday.

Directorate of traffic and road safety spokesperson Charles Ssebambulidde said in a statement that 23 fatal accidents were recorded from Dec. 23 to 28 in the country.

He said most of the accidents involved families that were traveling upcountry to join relatives for Christmas celebrations.

The police have attributed most of the accidents to reckless driving, over-speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The traffic police have issued strict guidelines warning of over-speeding, over-loading and drink driving to reduce road accidents during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures. Enditem
